Views On Poetry

Christian Says:  Poetry is the art of writing words to make a beautiful point of view out of something. With poems, one is able to express different feelings in another way than the ordinary writing. Not like a story or like keeping a journal. It needs inspiration to make a powerful statement. An author expresses either his beliefs like his devoted love fot his nation, a lover and even revolutionary speeches included.
   In Puerto Rico I think the poems that stand out the most are patriotic ones. Puertoricans get all these feelings about independence, these authors make the effort to isnpire people to follow.
   The romantic poems are well know throughout the world. About love, it's easy to get any kind of inspiration because just feeling in love gives you all kinds of ideas it's likely you'll end up writing a poem, even whent it's not very good.
   I think the purpose of the poem is just to be able to write about  what one feels like inside and just writing about it in an artistic and inspiring way.

Luis Says: Poetry to me is the song of the soul. It is the way the heart communicates what it feels and speaks to the rest of us. Poetry has been important to me when I’ve been in love. I have written poems to girls and helped me express my feelings to them. One time I wrote a poem for a friend and she liked it a lot and showed it to all of her friends. I now look back upon it and think I made a fool of myself in a way. Poetry can make a difference in someone’s life if it helps him/her fall in love or someone else fall in love. I think I consider all songs to be poems. An example is romantic songs by Luis Fonsi. In terms of movies I really can’t recall a poem. Poems are an important part of literature and an expression of the soul.

Jose Says: I believe that poetry has its purpose, it is as old as language in my opinion, since Darwin himself said that language probably evolved from primitive song. While I do not subscribe to this theory, there are other numerous theories that language was helped along by song. Hence I believe that poetry has its rightful place in the annals of human history. However, I think that poetry should stick to its rightful medium... music. Poetry has always been about the musicality, so when I hear a poem without music, its similar to playing ping pong without the mini-rackets; you can use your hands and still enjoy it, but I get the feeling that there is something missing. Given the state of popular music these days, it is a little hard to find quality poetry in music, but when one searches enough, there are numerous very talented poets out there. Poetry as a writing form is difficult to read and understand, hence it is mostly reserved for people that have a very high level of language and knowledge. I find it funny how the mass media tends to make fun of poets as saying any cheesy line and everybody in the audience ooing and awing. I find this to be a sad reflection of the common perception of poetry, in that people think its just a bunch of words. How wrong they are...

For me, poetry is a way to express your feelings and emotions through writtings. It uses rhymes and you have the liberty to express whatever you want and feel in poems. I’ve never been too interested in poetry, so I don’t have examples of when poetry was important to me, but I do remember a friend of mine, he had a girlfriend and he wrote her a poem and showed it to me before he gave it to his girlfriend, and I think it was pretty good because he really showed his emotions and how he felt in the poem.

Poetry can make a difference in someones life when it follows the messages of poetry and gains knowledge and uses those messages in the future. You can also write poetry, but is not an easy thing to do. Poetry doesn’t have limits and you can write about anything. I consider song lyrics and poetry to be the same, because they both express feelings and emotions and they rhyme. One song that is also a poem is “Patria” by Ruben Blades in wich he talks about native country in general. “Troy” es a movie from the Poem “Iliad” by Homer and the poem plays an important role in the movie, because basically the movie is bases on the poem.

Poetry is a way of expressing how you feel. Most of the times, it rhymes and it is really easy to read it, because it has rhythm. In high school, we read many poems and we had to analyze them. I like to read poetry, but sometimes it is not easy to understand it, and it is worse to analyze it. Sometimes I find it very difficult to read, I have to be in the mood to read it. Poetry helps us understand how other people feel and the messages they try to send to us. Poetry makes a difference in someone’s life when that person is able to express his or her feelings in a poem. When someone is able to write a poem, and send the message they want, people feel free. Although it is not easy to write poetry, some people find it very easy and fun. I consider that song lyrics are poetry. Poetry has some musicality and song lyrics rhyme and have rhythm. Song lyrics are poems, because people express how they feel, they talk about love, life experiences, and other things. I believe that Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet movie is poetic. They talk in a poetic way and express how they feel. It is really important, because we can see everything that the author wants us to understand.

Poetry is everywhere. It is in the way you speak to your friends and family. It is in the way you write a story and the music we hear. I believe everything we write down is poetry. Poetry has musicality. It does not always have to rhyme. Mostly when I write I write down in a poetic way. I make sure my words have a pattern and rhythm whether they rhyme or not. I love incorporating a type of musicality when I write because it is the best way to express myself. In mi senior year in high school I took literature it was a great experience I enjoyed reading the stories and poems. We had to write many poems and my teacher recognized a couple of mines. She said my poems had a double meaning. I did mean for it to be that way though. I like using metaphors and other things to give life to my poem. It is cool to read something and then say, “Wait!, what she meant was.. “. When it comes to the lyrics of a song and the similarity it has with poetry, I think they are both the same. They have a meaning, they have power, they have musicality and they portray a message. Like I said this is my definition of poetry. One of my favorite songs if a poem it is called “Perfectly Blind”. I cannot recall a time in which poetry was important in a movie because most of the movies I watch are comedy or horror and mostly do not have to do anything with poetry. I am not a big fan of romantic movies in which I think that poetry might be involved in. Here is one of my favorite songs which is also a poem.

Poetry can have different meanings, for me poetry is a type of writing that let you use your imagination and let you describe the things you feel, see, like or hear in any kind of way. The truth is that I don’t have examples of time when poetry was important to me. I have never been a real fan of poetry and in high school I felt obligated to analyze poems that I did not like. I don’t have any important experiences with poetry, but I remember a poem we studied in high school that interested me a lot. The name of the poem was “A Julia de Burgos” and the author is Julia de Burgos. I liked that poem because the author describes herself like she had another person inside her. Also it showed what the author was feeling and what she was thinking. I also learned a way in which people express their inner thoughts and emotions, and that is by writing poems.

Poetry can make a difference in someone’s life when the things you are reading, seeing or reading makes you feel important and happy. It can make a difference when you change things in your life, feel different emotions towards others and help others in your life. Song lyrics and poetry are the same because they both have rime, and they express feelings and thoughts that we have. There are both uses to express your inner self to others. People also use them to communicate with each other and share their emotions. A song that it is a poem is Cantares, written by Antonio Machado and Joan Manuel Serrat. A poem was important in the movie Patch Adams. The scene of the poem was when he was saying his goodbyes to his girlfriend, he recited a poem of Pablo Neruda called 100 love sonnets. It was important because it gave the movie a tone of sadness and compassion for Patch. It also represents how Patch Adams was feeling at the moment for the loss of his girlfriend and how he still feels deep love for her even though she is dead. It also demonstrates how poems can show the deepest feelings inside one’s body. We can see that poems are a reflexive way to show your ideas and imagination.
